Fate
So the other day I was sitting in my theatre 110 class and we had just read the play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and the teacher asked everyone if they believed in fate or not. As the teacher asked students around the room, I heard a lot of good views and opinions on the subject. As a class, the majority said that they believed in fate. For those of you who don’t know, fate is something that unavoidably befalls on a person. This means that basically your path is already chosen and it is going to end that way no matter what you do; in other words, your destiny. Most of the class said that they believed in fate mainly because everything happens for a reason. In my opinion, I do not believe in fate. I don’t believe that your path is already set before you. I think that you have the choice on how you want your life to be lived by the choices you make and the actions you take. If every human being believed that their life was predetermined, this world would not be able to function. I mean that completely rules out the option of making choices and actions on our own. Personally I live life not worrying about why things happen because I believe these “things” (whatever it may be) just happen and these things can happen whenever and wherever. After my theatre teacher had asked the whole class for their opinion, over half the class had changed their mind.

Wow. That is a cool take on fate. However, I disagree. I think that people need to look at it from both sides: you do need to take the initiative and try and change your life however you feel it needs to change because that's exactly what you were meant to do. Yes, I know, it sounds like that one saying "You are completely unique- just like everybody else." But there's truth to it. I don't think it's a matter of just letting things happen as fate allows, but being the best that you can to fulfill it.=] So yes, I guess you could say I do believe in fate.=]
ReplyDeletePersonally I do not beleive in fate. I think that a person is always responsible for his or her actions. That person is also responsible for the way their life turns out and they CANNOT blame anyone else for it. I like the way that you wrote this though and pretty much agree with your beliefs.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you wrote this blog. It really made me think. I've never actually thought about fate before. I completely agree with you about fate not existing. I really like the line about how if fate existed, then humans would not be able to function. I mean, if everyone's life was already set up to end in a certain way, then nobody would try anything new. There would be no point in doing anything at all, besides sitting on the couch and watching tv. Life is about choices.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love philosophical questions! Especially when they relate to literature!
ReplyDeleteI spend my whole life preaching about choices...I like the "power" they give to the individual. So, I'm not sure how I reconcile this idea with fate.
Great, thoughtful post.
